Accessibility Statement

Updated: September 28, 2020

We are committed to ensuring website accessibility for people with disabilities, including those with visual, hearing, cognitive and motor impairments. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) defines requirements to improve accessibility for people with disabilities.

What are we doing?

We at The Ship’s Knees Inn have recently rebuilt our website to improve compliance with modern web accessibility standards. Each page on our website has been audited using the Google Lighthouse Accessibility and the WAVE Accessibility tools. Our website has also been manually tested for keyboard navigation. Efforts have also been made to use appropriate color contrast.

Our booking engine is provided by a third party (Reservation Nexus). Their booking system has been audited for ADA compliance and they actively monitor compliance on an ongoing basis.

How are we doing?

WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility is our gold standard, but we understand that our website is dynamic, and new content could introduce an accessibility barrier not previously detected in our audits. If at any time you have specific questions & concerns, or encounter an accessibility barrier on any particular page on our website, we ask that you contact us immediately and let us know the page & issue so that we can make all reasonable efforts to remove the barrier or provide alternate access to the same information.

Physical Accessibility at our Inn

The Ship’s Knees Inn, aka “The Freeman Snow House” was built in 1820 & is reflective of the typical houses built during that era. Present day building codes regulate new construction & changes to existing homes, but due to the Inn’s age it is “grandfathered” at its present previously constructed condition & maintained as such.  For this reason the Inn has no compliant ADA rooms as significant alterations would impact the historic features of the property and necessary changes to provide accessibility are currently not readily achievable for both the physical building & the surrounding landscaping.

Consistent with the prevailing architecture of that period the Inn has steep interior staircases that are narrow with multiple levels, narrow hallways & room doors that create complications for wheelchair access & may provide some restrictions to certain guests depending on physical abilities. We would be pleased to communicate accessibility specifics when details are requested & do not hesitate to call if clarification is needed.

Some specifics to know when assessing whether our Inn is suitable to your needs:

  • We have gravel stone parking areas for both general parking & office guest check-in.
  • 9 exterior steps to provide access to the front door of the inn & 1 step to enter. 1 step to enter the office North door.
  • The Inn has (6) 2nd floor & (11) 1st floor accommodations. We do not have an elevator. All 1st floor accommodations have at minimum 1 step to navigate with narrow hallways & doorways. All ensuite bathrooms have narrow doors with 3-5” shower curb thresholds. Some first-floor rooms may be suitable for some guests with disabilities who are not requiring wheelchair access.
